How are Mutual Funds Invested?

In my first video of a many part series, I outlined what mutual funds are, discussed why they are popular, and give you an idea of how a portfolio manager decides what to invest in. Today’s video outlines in more detail how mutual funds are invested. In short, a prospectus outlines generally how the portfolio manager of the fund will invest the cash. There are two main ways this can be accomplished: 

  1. Actively: a portfolio manager selects individual stocks and/or times the market in order to outperform, or 
  2. Passively: the portfolio manager tracks an index.
