Not All Index Funds Are Created Equal

March 16, 2018 - 0 comments

Do you remember the tech craze of the 1990s, when it seemed as if every dot.com start-up was a sure bet? A few of them, like eBay, are still with us today. But hindsight has made it crystal clear that not every e-flash in the pan was built to last. Investors who loaded their life’s savings into the run-up learned this lesson the hard way.

As fond as I am of using index and index-like funds to implement passive investing, they too may have grown a little too popular lately. Don’t get me wrong. There are still many excellent ones to be found. But in the recent rush to launch hot new funds that track stuff nobody has yet thought of tracking (and there may be a reason for that!), I’m afraid common practice has often been running way ahead of common sense.

So how do you differentiate genuine, time-tested index funds from the freshly painted decoys? I’ll tell you what to look for in today’s Common Sense Investing. In the meantime, I genuinely hope you’ll subscribe to my YouTube channel. And stick around, because I’m in this for the long haul.
